The Chesspower interschool tournament was held at Ngaruawahia High School on Thursday 14th June this year. The results were as follows: 1st Hamilton Boys High School 2nd Ngaruawahia High School 3rd Te Kuiti High School We were coming 3rd for most of the competition but then pipped Te Kuiti right at the end, beating them by half a point. The top 2 teams qualify for the Nationals, so our school is able to send our top 5 students from the tournament to the Nationals in Christchurch on Friday, 18th October 2019 (Villa Maria College). Our top 5 from the tournament were: (in this order): 1. Alexis Muru 2. Dante Brougham 3. Te Oranga Herangi 4. Jahvana Brougham 5. Aomi Irani This is the third year our school has qualified for the Nationals. The first year was in 2015, the Nationals were held in Auckland; 2017, Nationals held in Wellington and 2019, Nationals to be held in Christchurch. To give our students more practise for this year’s Nationals a group of students will be travelling to Te Kuiti on September 2nd to participate in their Regional Chess tournament. We also have a cool Chess room which all students use regularly to practise their skills at interval and lunchtimes. The five students and Mrs West, who are travelling to the Nationals in Christchurch, would like to thank sponsors for their donations both financially and in kind.
