[WARNING - GRAPHIC IMAGES ] Our Year 12 Biology students learned about the similarities and differences in the respiratory systems of insects, fish, and mammals earlier this year. To reinforce their learning and view the gas exchange structures of a fish and a mammal first hand, they were given the opportunity to dissect an anchovy and a rat. (Please note: the fish were donated from Seafood Bazaar, and the rats are bred and euthanised ethically at AgResearch Ltd). Dissections can be valuable learning experiences, as they allow students to observe anatomical structures and make connections to the concepts they have been studying. --Whaea Rachael
